Dig Deep (Sunnyside): B
Boston-based pianist Gardony doesn’t do straight-ahead piano trio. With bassist John Lockwood and drummer Yoron Israel, his is among the city’s top trios. But Gardony eschews the standard repertoire and instead draws moods from rock, blues and gospel, shuffles the deck with offbeat time signatures, and feasts on the groove. Though his approach sometimes shortchanges melody, it’s hard to complain about a luscious tune such as “Sunday Afternoon,” which is the hands-down track to download.
